This book, which was written and published by the American Centre, contains an introduction by the American academic and translator Gregory Rabassa, who was an associate of the American Centre and PEN International’s Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee. The book comprises papers that were presented at The World of Translation, an international conference on literary translation that was organised by the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee (then called the Committee on Translations) and held on 12 May 1970 in New York. This conference was the first of its kind to be conducted in the United States and still takes place today, with the American Centre celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020.
