Anna Brigadere (1861-1933) was a distinguished Latvian playwright, poet, and novelist. Her semi-autobiographical three-part novel, The Annele Trilogy, is packed with colorful characters, animals as memorable as its people, and the lovingly rendered landscapes of Latvia before the turn of the 19th century a book for young and old that vividly describes a small girl s expanding world, uncovering the roots of three forces that give meaning to human life: God, the natural world, and work.

This is the first English translation of this modern classic, by Latvian-born Minnesota translator Ilze Klavina Mueller. Black-and-white illustrations are by Latvian artist Dzemma Skulme, with cover art by Linda Treija.
